Serpentine is California's official "state rock", and is of particular interest to botanists
because it often is habitat for unusual or rare species of plants. Soils derived from
serpentine or low in essential nutrients and high in substances which hinder plant growth,
so most plants will not grow on these soils (as seen here). Yet, some species have evolved a
tolerance to serpentine and enjoy the benefits of the lack of competition from other plants.
