Western Rattlesnake
Crotalus viridus
![]() Juvenile snake along Manzanita Point Road, Pine Ridge.
This individual was found at Coe Headquarters, captured, and released in an area
away from the buildings. Park staff do not kill rattlesnakes but relocate them to areas
less visited by humans.

Note the three segments or "buttons" on the rattle.
I came across this fine fellow at its breakfast one morning
while I was working at construction of the China Hole Trail
realignment on the north end of Mahoney Ridge. It was
motionless at the side of the trail, and showed no reaction
as I snapped this and other photos.
The mouse was extremely large compared to the size of the
rattler, and even with its ability to unhinge its jaws, it probably
had to digest the rodent before it could completely swallow it.
A few hours later, the snake was gone.
