Upper San Antonio Valley

The gently rolling Upper San Antonio Valley, perhaps the broadest relatively
flat area of Coe Park.  View north toward the park's northern boundary.  The peak
at the center of the horizon is Red Mountain, about 7 miles north of this viewpoint.

The leafless trees are blue oak (Quercus douglasii).  The low greyish perennials
are Wright's eriogonum (Eriogonum wrightii).

Because this area is so flat and because it is only about a mile from the park
to a paved public road, Coe Park's general plan allows for this area to be
developed as an additional entrance.  At present, however, there is no public
right-of-way between San Antonio Valley Road and the park, so direct access
into this area is not allowed.

It is unlikely that this entrance will be developed in the near future---or any time
within the next couple of decades.  The state is currently putting your dollars into
developing the Bell Station entrance with the Dowdy Ranch as a visitor facility
area.  Next on the agenda will be seeing about developing Hunting Hollow.

Meanwhile, the only way to reach the Upper San Antonio Valley area of the park
is to hike in via Red Creek Road.  The temptation is to take the shortcut on
County Line Road north from Bear Mountain, but this goes through private property.
Despite its name, County Line Road is not a public county road, and there is no
public right-of-way even for walking.
