Striped Skunk
Mephitis mephitis

This charming critter was foraging around the
base of an oak one morning.  It circled the tree
trunk, and each time it was out of sight behind
the tree, I moved a little closer, quietly snapping a
photo each time it reappeared.  I probably
got no closer than 30 feet before it seemed
nervous about my presence.

Near the junction of the Corral and Springs
trails, Pine Ridge.

Skunks are mostly nocturnal, but can sometimes be seen during the day.  If you get too close,
they will raise their tail and stamp their feet in threat, and if you persist, will spray you with
their offensively strong, persistent scent.
