Given the name, some would expect Purple Pond to look like
this; but this is just Dittmann's "artistic" alteration of the prior
Tony Ferrari image.
The name actually comes from the color of the pond on the
USGS quad map. Many USGS maps show revisions made solely
from aerial photos which lack the usual field check. To distinguish them, these
"photo-revisions" are printed in purple ink. This pond happens to be
the only one in its vicinity on the map which was added as a result of
photo-revision. Hence the name, coined by volunteers or staff.
