Armstrong, Margaret, in collaboration with J.J. Thornber,  Field Book of Western Wild Flowers
C.P. Putnam's Sons, 1915.  596 pp.  Out of print.
This is a wonderful general guidebook by a noted book designer which has line drawings and watercolors which are both artistic and botanically accurate.  It is particularly useful if you are a newsletter or nature journal editor and you need copyright-expired illustrations to use, for it has 548 of them.  You might be able to find a copy in a used book store.  If your local store doesn't have it, you can often find it on the web at www.abe.com.

Blackwell, Laird R., Wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada and the Central Valley
Lone Pine, 1999. 288 pp. $15.95
Good photographic guide has fair coverage of Coe species and related genera.

Briggs, Winslow   The Trails of Henry W. Coe State Park: Coe Ranch Section  Third Edition
Pine Ridge Association, 2000.  218 pp. $11.50
Not just a guide to trail connections, includes generous amounts of information on natural history, especially plants.

Crampton, Beecher  Grasses in California
University of California Press, 1974.  178 pp.  $13.95
California Natural History Guides series. A good introduction to the more common native and alien grasses, useful for intermediate to advanced amateurs. (Given the specialized structures of grasses, probably no grass guide is well-suited for beginners, since few beginners will want to spend the time to learn a whole new terminology.) Includes dichotomous keys, good basic descriptions, and notes on distribution.  8 color plates, 92 line drawings.

Dittmann, Lee  100 Spring Wildflowers of Henry W. Coe State Park, California
buddha-nature maps & books, 2000.  48 pp. $4.75
Popular identification guidebook to common species, illustrated with black and white line drawings.

Eastman, Stew A Guide to Flora of the Forest Trail
Pine Ridge Association, 1997. 50¢ donation
Illustrated pamphlet keyed to numbered posts along a popular trail near Coe Headquarters aids in the identification of many common trees and shrubs.

Grillos, Steve J.  Ferns and Fern Allies of California
University of California Press, 1966.  104 pp.  $10.95
A guidebook describing 86 species of ferns and other spore-bearing groups (e.g. horsetails and quillworts) commonly found in the state.  Includes 62 line drawings, a key to the species, and (for a pocket guide) fairly detailed description of each with ranges.  The technical language used in the book makes it more suited for intermediate to advanced level users, though the determined beginner can make sense of it using the glossary and diagrams provided.

Hickman, James C., editor The Jepson Manual: Higher Plants of California
University of California Press, 1993. 1400 pp. $95.00
Massive volume describes all plants known to grow wild in California. Well-illustrated with line drawings. Indispensable for the serious botanist, unintelligible to the beginner.

Kozloff, Eugene N., and Linda H. Beidleman  Plants of the San Francisco Bay
     Region: Mendocino to Monterey
Sagen Press, 1994. 332 pp. $29.95
Comprehensive keys for the meticulous and devout enthusiast; outstanding color photographs for everyone. The beginner may find it a worthy investment for the color photographs alone.  A new, revised edition is just out in Spring 2003, published by University of California Press,

Munz, Philip A. California Spring Wildflowers
University of California Press, 1961. 104 pp. (Not currently available).
Contains good, basic information; includes most groups of spring flowers including many shrubs. Arranged by color and well-illustrated.

Niehaus, T. F. A Field Guide to Pacific States Wildflowers (Peterson Field Guide Series)
Houghton Mifflin Company, 1976. 432 pp. $18.00
For beginning and intermediate-level botanists alike. Arranged by color, well-illustrated and well-organized; probably your best buy. Doesn't include shrubs.

Pavlik, Bruce M., Pamela C. Muick, Sharon G. Johnson, and Marjorie Popper  Oaks of California
Cachuma Press, 1991. 184 pp.  $21.95
Both gorgeously illustrated and informative, this is the first book devoted exclusively to the state's oaks. Not only does it give you detailed species by species descriptions, but there are large chapters on oak landscapes of California, wildlife and oaks, California oaks and the human past, preserving oaks for future generations, and a guide to exploring California's oak landscapes.

Sims, Lee  Shrubs of Henry W. Coe State Park  Second Edition
Pine Ridge Association, 1997. 65 pp. $4.85
Useful for everyone interested in shrubs, from beginners to advanced. Simple keys and clear line drawings help you identify almost every species of shrub in Coe Park.
