CUPRESSACEAE: CYPRESS FAMILY
Juniperus californica. {++} CALIFORNIA JUNIPER. Shrub or shrublike tree. Dry slopes and flats. Uncommon on W side (China Hole, the Narrows, Middle Fk Coyote Ck, Blue Ridge northwest of Mt Sizer, Rock House Ridge, Divide Ridge, Grizzly Ck), fairly common on E side (Upper San Antonio Valley, Red Ck, Pinto Ck, Robinson Mtn, S Fk Orestimba Ck, Mustang Flat, Long Ridge, N Fk Pacheco Ck).
PINACEAE: PINE FAMILY
Pinus ponderosa. {++} PONDEROSA PINE. WESTERN YELLOW PINE. Tree, the tallest in the park. Pine Ridge, Middle Ridge & Blue Ridge with scattered individuals in adjacent canyons, including one on the slope E of China Hole. One isolated ponderosa grows on the Little Long Canyon slopes of Rock House Ridge. Two have also been found in Cañada de la Dormida of the Redfern Addition. (Images of these shown on separate page.)
Pinus sabiniana. {++} GRAY PINE. FOOTHILL PINE. Tree. Dry flats, slopes & ridges throughout, except apparently absent in Redfern Addition south of Willson Ranch. The second most abundant tree after the blue oak, and frequently in association with it. The old name "Digger Pine" is derived from the name imposed upon the aboriginal Californians by racist settlers: "Diggers."
TAXACEAE: YEW FAMILY
Torreya californica. {++} CALIFORNIA-NUTMEG. CALIFORNIA TORREYA. Small tree. Cool shaded slopes. Rare in park, known from one small tree at the N end of Blue Ridge; a small grove ca ¼ mi NW of Mt Sizer just inside park boundary (30-40 or more trunks in three major clumps, some trunks one foot in diameter and ca 35 feet tall); and from another small tree on the S slopes of the Narrows of Coyote Ck. Also grows outside of the park ca c mile north of Mt Sizer.
