Aesculus californica
California Buckeye
Habit, in bloom.
On middle slopes of Phegley Ridge.
This specimen is more isolated than most. California buckeye typically
grows in shadier, more wooded areas than this at Coe Park.
The path is a cattle trail, and the bare areas beneath are from cattle
seeking shelter beneath the tree. While in general the park is closed to
grazing, the state did allow a ten-year cattle lease on the slopes of
Hunting Hollow as part of the land purchase deal.

South end of Wasno Ridge.

Although a prolific bloomer, only a few flowers in each inflorescence will
be fertilized, and all but one or two of these will abort.
